The calculation is body weight in kilograms multiplied by a protein coefficient drawn from published nutrition research. Those coefficients differ by goal because the demands differ:

General health & maintenance — 0.8 to 1.0 g/kg

The Recommended Dietary Allowance sits at 0.8g/kg. It's a floor designed to prevent deficiency in a sedentary adult, not an optimum — which is why nearly every other goal on this list sits above it.

Losing weight, protecting muscle — 1.2 to 1.6 g/kg

In a calorie deficit your body will break down lean tissue for fuel unless you give it a reason not to. A meta-analysis of 24 randomized controlled trials found that energy-restricted high-protein diets mitigated the loss of fat-free mass compared with standard-protein diets matched for calories (PMID: 23097268). A separate 12-week trial in 46 women measured it directly: at comparable total weight loss, the higher-protein group lost 1.5 kg of lean mass versus 2.8 kg (PMID: 17299116).

Losing weight + resistance training — 1.6 to 2.0 g/kg

Muscle gain research clusters in this range. Beyond roughly 2.2g/kg, additional protein shows diminishing returns in most studies.

More isn't always better

Worth knowing before you aim high: a 12-week randomized trial in 61 overweight older adults on a 25% energy restriction compared 1.7 g/kg/day against 0.9 g/kg/day — and the higher intake did not better preserve lean mass, strength, or physical performance (PMID: 26471344). Above a sufficient threshold, protein shows diminishing returns — and it works best paired with resistance training rather than stacked higher on its own.

How much protein do I need per day to lose weight?

Research on preserving lean muscle during weight loss consistently points to 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day — roughly 92 to 123 grams for a 170-pound adult. That's meaningfully higher than the 0.8g/kg RDA, because a calorie deficit puts lean tissue at risk unless protein intake and resistance training give the body a reason to hold onto it.

How much protein per meal should I eat?

Most people do best splitting their daily target across meals at roughly 30 to 40 grams each, rather than loading it all into dinner. If your appetite is reduced, front-load it — appetite typically fades as the day goes on, so the protein you eat at breakfast is the protein you're most likely to actually get.

Is 100g of protein a day enough?

For a 170-pound (77kg) adult losing weight, 100g falls within the commonly cited 1.2–1.6 g/kg range and is a reasonable target. Whether it's enough for you depends on your body weight and whether you're resistance training — a heavier person or someone lifting regularly will need more.

Can I get enough protein if my appetite is low?

It's harder but achievable with strategy rather than willpower: eat protein first at every meal, front-load your day, keep zero-preparation options like hard-boiled eggs and cottage cheese on hand, and use a protein shake to close whatever gap remains. When chewing itself is the obstacle, drinking your protein is a legitimate answer.

Does protein powder count toward my daily target?
